The Attention Extractors

A taxonomy of the systems built to extract, commodify, and deplete human attention.

Attention is the fundamental resource of modern life, and its extraction is the fundamental business of the modern economy.

This is not a metaphor. It is the literal structure of how the largest companies in the world make money. Google, Meta, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube - these are not technology companies. They are attention companies. They exist to aggregate human attention and sell access to it to advertisers.

The Extraction Mechanism

The core extraction mechanism is relatively simple: create an environment that rewards continued presence and punishes departure.

Variable reward is the psychological engine. Slot machines are the paradigmatic example - the unpredictability of the reward is precisely what makes the behavior compulsive. Social media feeds operate on the same principle.

Infinite scroll is the architectural expression of this logic. The traditional article has an end. The feed does not. The removal of natural stopping points was a deliberate design decision. There is no moment at which the platform says you've seen enough.

Social Obligation as Retention

The extraction mechanism is layered with a social dimension that makes departure feel costly. Platforms are not just repositories of content. They are social environments where relationships are maintained. Leaving the platform and leaving your social network feel like the same thing.

The Attention Economy's Internal Logic

The platforms have no incentive to make you happy. What the system needs is users in a state of continued mild dissatisfaction, perpetual searching, productive anxiety about what they might be missing.

Content that provokes strong negative emotions consistently outperforms positive content on engagement metrics. The feeds were tuned to maximize the presence of content that makes you feel bad, because that content keeps you on the platform longer.

The Practice of Attention Sovereignty

The term for the alternative is attention sovereignty - the practice of deliberate, self-directed control over where your attention goes.

The first step is simply the accurate naming of what is happening: these systems are not neutral tools. They are extraction mechanisms. Your attention is being taken from you for the commercial benefit of others.

You are not failing at self-control when you find it difficult to put the phone down. You are encountering the product of an enormous industry dedicated specifically to making that difficult. The appropriate response is not self-reproach. It is strategic resistance, clearly understood.
